The Observation Deck at New York Rockefeller Center
If you’re looking to enjoy some spectacular views of New York City’s skyline, you can’t miss taking a trip over to the Rockefeller Center. This beautiful skyscraper possesses a 6 level observatory deck that is also known as “Top of the Rock”, and promises its guests a memorable experience. The higher levels of the observatory deck at Top of the Rock are around 850 feet above street level, making it easy to take in the Big Apple’s amazing skyline.
Originally opened to the public in 1933, the Rockefeller Center Observation Deck’s original design was meant to resemble the upper decks of some grand cruise liners. That is why you’ll find plenty of deck chairs, and other things that belong aboard a cruise ship, including large air vents that are positioned to resemble a ship’s stacks. Top of the Rock was closed to the public in 1986 for a huge make-over and re-opened in 2005 with a fresh and renovated look. Today, it is one of the city’s most visited attractions, rivaling even the Empire State Building, even though the latter is higher.
The Observation Deck allows visitors to see a wide array of New York City landmarks that range from lovely views of Central Park, to the Hudson River. Top of The Rock’s security personnel and staff can be extremely helpful in identifying the city’s most important spots, as well as advise you on where to stand for a better look. The deck has six levels, both indoor and outdoor, so you can watch the city without worrying about the weather. And, Top of the Rock is open from 8 a.m. until midnight, allowing visitors to decide what time of day they’d prefer to observe the Big Apple. If you want some spectacular views of Central Park, a morning visit is best. But if you like watching the city lights, you should go at night, which will also let you catch a lovely view of the Empire State Building.
Also, trips up to the Rockefeller Center’s Observation Deck are timed, which is relief for most visitors as they won’t have to make long lines or worry about finding a spot on deck for a good look. You won’t have trouble getting good pictures of the Chrysler Building, the East River and other interesting places while on deck. Plus, if you’re on a family trip, Top of the Rock is child-friendly, allowing kids under six to go up for free when accompanied by their parents, as well as allowing the use of strollers on deck.
