With over two million works of art and historical artifacts spanning more than five thousand years of history, the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York is extensive and it is virtually impossible to appreciate more than a limited selection of galleries. To appreciate a reasonable sample of objects and main works of the collection is necessary to devote at least half a day to visit.
The Metropolitan Museum has two main levels of galleries that house a collection divided into departments:
Galleries in Level One:
Galleries in the Second Level:
During the summer through early fall, the Metropolitan Museum of contemporary artists sculptures installed on the roof from where you can enjoy views of Central Park. Visitors have access to the exhibition with the ticket, but depending on the number of visitors, the museum limits the number of people assigned access times on the tickets.
The Costume Institute at the basement of the building performs temporary exhibitions relating to the world of fashion and clothing of the period.
