Metropolitan Museum New York

With over two million works of art and historical artifacts spanning more than five thousand years of history, the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York is extensive and it is virtually impossible to appreciate more than a limited selection of galleries. To appreciate a reasonable sample of objects and main works of the collection is necessary to devote at least half a day to visit.

The Metropolitan Museum has two main levels of galleries that house a collection divided into departments:

Galleries in Level One:

  • Wing of the Americas with paintings of the Hudson River School and decorative objects from Frank Lloyd Wright and Tiffany.
  • Arms and Armor with examples of medieval armor.
  • Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas.
  • Egyptian art, with statues, objects and the Temple of Dendur.
  • European Sculpture and Decorative Arts with works of Bernini to Rodin.
  • Robert Lehman Collection, including paintings and drawings by masters of the Renaissance to the 20th century as Botticelli, Rembrandt, Monet and Matisse.
  • Medieval Art.
  • Modern and Contemporary Art with paintings and drawings from 1900 to the present which include works by Picasso, Dali, O’Keefe and Andy Warhol.

Galleries in the Second Level:

  • Middle Eastern Art
  • Asian Art
  • Drawings and engravings with examples of European art of the century 15 to 19
  • Century European Paintings 12 to 19, with examples of Titian, Caravaggio, Velazquez, and Goya among others
  • Photographs
  • Musical Instruments
  • European Painting of the 19th and 20, with galleries dedicated to Cezanne, Monet, Seurat and Van Gogh paintings, Gauguin and Picasso.

During the summer through early fall, the Metropolitan Museum of contemporary artists sculptures installed on the roof from where you can enjoy views of Central Park. Visitors have access to the exhibition with the ticket, but depending on the number of visitors, the museum limits the number of people assigned access times on the tickets.

The Costume Institute at the basement of the building performs temporary exhibitions relating to the world of fashion and clothing of the period.
